Choosing

Choosing the right loan originator.

A reverse mortgage is one of the biggest financial decisions of your life. The person walking you through it matters — here is what to look for.

What to look for

Five qualities that matter

 • Expertise: Select someone well-versed in all aspects of reverse mortgages, not a generalist who occasionally does one.
 • Ethical conduct: A qualified originator adheres to strict ethical conduct and informs you of all loan terms and conditions clearly.
 • Respect for your needs: Demonstrates utmost respect for your needs and goals — without applying pressure.
 • No steering: Will not pressure you or steer you into another type of loan (e.g., an annuity) that might not be in your best interest.
 • Transparency and guidance: Walks you through each step of the process and answers all questions — even the ones you ask twice.

Educate yourself before you choose

The more educated you are going in, the better equipped you are to evaluate any loan originator's recommendations. The simple act of asking informed questions weeds out a lot of pretenders. Read the FAQs on this site, watch the videos, and call me with whatever's left.
