The Certified Reverse Mortgage Professional designation is the highest credential in the reverse mortgage industry, awarded by the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association.
What it takes
Earning the CRMP — what NRMLA requires
- Minimum of three years' experience in the reverse mortgage business, or have personally closed 50+ reverse mortgages.
- Adherence to the NRMLA Code of Ethics — Fairness, Confidentiality, Quality, and Professionalism.
- NRMLA's Ethics Course, plus 8 additional hours annually to maintain.
- A comprehensive exam covering eligibility, programs, regulations, ethics, and counseling.
- A formal background check.
- 12 hours of continuing-education courses to qualify.
What working with a CRMP looks like in practice
A CRMP carefully listens to you, can reliably answer your questions in a way that's easily understandable, and avoids rushing you through decision-making. They emphasize identifying sustainable aging-in-place solutions — not just closing the loan.
The designation is recognized by a lapel pin, a business-card logo, and an office certificate. You can verify any loan originator's CRMP status on the NRMLA website. There are only a few hundred active CRMPs in the country — it's a small community committed to a high bar.
