The area of Newport Beach was first inhabited by the Tongva people with a thriving coastal community for thousands of years. It’s quite shocking, considering the cost of Newport real estate that at one time the State of California sold acre plots for the sum of $1 each. Throughout the 1800s European settlers colonized the land. The population grew substantially following the 1870 arrival of a 105-ton steamer named The Vaquero, captained by Captain Samuel S. Dunnells. His navigation of the treacherous bay ushered in a new era of cargo shipping and new arrivals. Hearing the news James Irvine to the San Joaquin Ranch where it was agreed the newly found navigable port should be named “Newport”. In 1906 the fledgling town with a mere 206 residents was incorporated. In April 2020 the population census reports a population of 85,239.

Today, Newport is one of California’s most desirable and expensive coastal communities. Tourists and residents alike use the Catalina Flyer commercial ferry to visit Catalina Island, in addition to harbor tours, whale watching, and sports fishing charters.
